Our 2nd Pinterest Inspired Room

When we came across this photo on Pinterest, we were immediately reminded of the upholstered, nail head trim ottoman from our recent Warehouse Event (pictured below, right).

Using the ottoman as a starting point, it was a piece of cake coming up with some awesome ways to recreate the look of this breezy, relaxing bedroom with items currently in our store! Our Pinterest Inspired Room

We're not sure if it's the gloomy weather outside or the fact that we've been staring at nothing but red and green since the beginning of the holiday season (October...really???), but when we stumbled upon this photo while browsing Pinterest, it made our eyes light up and had our hearts pitter-pattering just a little faster than usual...

So, in true Design-Diva form, we decided to try and recreate this room with items from our store! Check out how we would copy this room's decor, and let us know what you think!

We'd start with a Divine Consign-ordered Surya rug with a simple pattern in a neutral color, like one of these. (Remember, we can special-order any Surya rug you'd like, for a fraction of what they sell for in other stores!)

The lamp we have is very similar to the pair in the photo, the blue glass vase is practical while still being decorative (and absolutely gorgeous!), and these super-fun, brightly colored, animal print pillows turn it into a fun and lively place to unwind.

Symmetrical vs. Asymmetrical design

It’s Spring! Which means it’s the perfect time to do some redecorating!

Okay, don't stress out…redecorating your space doesn't have to be difficult! It can be as inexpensive and easy as moving your sofa around or adding some wall art. You don’t need to be a creative mastermind to update a room’s style—that’s what the lovely people here at Divine Consign are for!

Anxious to add some pizzazz to your living room, but afraid of doing something wrong? One word my friends. Say it with me. BALANCE.

Contrary to popular belief, balance does not necessarily equal symmetry. Sure, symmetry is naturally more appealing to the eye. But asymmetrical decor can be just as appealing, AND it allows you to add personality and character to your space.

Ready to give it a go? Here are a few Do’s and Don’ts to remember when decorating your home in an asymmetrical design:

Do make sure furniture is proportionate to each other and to the size of the room.

Do create a center focal point, and decorate around that area or item.

Don’t over-decorate. Simple is almost always better, especially when room décor is not symmetrical.

It’s spring! How about adding some color to your home décor?

The air is warming up, the sun is staying out later, why not brighten up your home with a little bit of color?

Tangerine is making an appearance this spring, and over at Divine Consign we are thrilled—what a fun, vibrant color! Not ready to paint your whole living room bright orange? Here are a few fun ways to add pizzazz to your home, sans a long-term commitment.

Fabric 

     Sprucing up any room in your house can be as simple as finding that perfect area rug, accent pillow, or set of drapes. This is a great low-cost way to celebrate this seasonal color without going overboard! (Oh, and did we mention Divine Consign does custom upholstery and drapery??  How convenient!)

    Paint an accent wall  

   Don’t let this bold color scare you away! Orange can actually be a very calming color, making a room seem cozy and comfortable. And you can choose from an array of tones, ranging from softer shades like “Pumpkin” and “Salmon” to brighter tangerines and even gold.  

Go trendy and practical! 

Can’t bring yourself to spend on fluffy pillows or a modern accent chair, just because it’s “in season”? Go the practical route and buy pieces that serve a function as well as add character! (And come on, how CUTE is that tangerine clock?!)

It's a new year! Time for a new you and a new room! Does the thought of redesigning a room give you a raging case of hives? It doesn't have to be so over-whelming! We have developed a six-week shape up guide that will have you decorating like a pro in six short weeks. Start channeling your inner Martha Stewart or Thom Filicia and let's get started!

  

 WEEK ONE - SPACE PLANNING

Let's talk space planning! Not a difficult concept, space planning is simply how you want your space (room) to function the way you want it to. The goal is to make the room flow and look beautiful without being cluttered.

Let's start planning! First, grab the nearest notepad to create your very own design journal. Calm down - we're not asking you to create the next novel for Oprah's Book Club, just a few pages to jot down notes will suffice. Or, for you techy-types, grab your I-something-or-other ... whatever works!

Now, take a minute to look around your room. Look at the size, shape, and traffic patterns of your room. Choose an area for each function in the room: office, entertainment, conversation, etc. Consider the unexpected - a barely used closet could become your new home office! Create a rough outline of the room in your journal and mark the different zones within the room (this is where your multi-colored highlighters come in handy - one color for each zone).

Zones created? Good. Now think about each zone separately. What do you want or need in each zone to make it ideal?  For instance, in your office zone, do you need: space for a computer, writing surface, task lighting, storage or filing space, cable/phone/internet access? Make a list of your wants/needs for each zone.

Almost there ... now take a minute to think about the basic items you'll need in each zone. Seating for Entertainment Zone? Desk for Office Zone?  Storage for Kids' Play Zone? Now dig a bit deeper. How can each item serve multiple functions? Can the television also function as a computer monitor? Can your filing/storage area also function as toy storage? Would a console table behind a sofa also double as a desk? If you hang the TV on the wall does it create more space for seating/storage?

Congratulations! You did it and you barely broke a sweat! You now have a very general blueprint (or, in designer-speak, a space plan) for your room.  Now you know what you need to place in the room to make it work. Hold on to your pretty space plan - it will be your design guide.
